There were many people already near the bonfire even the weather was cool and windy. A part of them was already pretty much drunk but many hadn’t still taken any alcohol and they were waiting the bonfire to be set on fire. Like I had supposed there were many underage partier because they weren’t allowed to go bars. Some older people were looking at frowned to youngsters drinking. I guess there would be a long conversation about this in letters to the editor column next week in our local newspapers. I saw many schoolmates and also some girls from floorball team there. I just went with them and anybody didn’t even take my appearing weird at all. They started to be so drunk that they were only hugging me and each others and sputtering something.

The bonfire was set to fire on a surface which was already ready in the water. Then a boat of local fire and rescue department took it in the middle of the river. It was actually a good decision because otherwise many youngsters would have been partying a bit too aggressive near the fire. Now only few boats were keeping eye on the bonfire and made sure that the fire wouldn’t spread anywhere.

During the evening I noticed I was sitting on a bench staring at the bonfire with my ex-classmate Liisa. She had been the tightest of our class. The average of certification had been almost ten, the best anyone could ever get. And I haven’t ever heard her laughing during the school. Usually she was wearing businesslike clothes, no makeup, glasses and her hair was either open or a ponytail. Her being was in any case so appropriate. She would never break any rules. So what was Liisa doing here in the middle of all these partiers? This was the first time when I saw her in any of these kinds of events in the city. Then I realized I was actually talking with Liisa. I don’t know if it showed how down I had fallen. Talking with Liisa on Midsummer’s Eve! I hadn’t ever paid any attention to her at school. She was somehow fusing to background with her silent and serious nature. But now when I talked with her I realized she had actually pretty interesting opinions and viewpoints about different things. But even so, everybody would think I’m crazy if I started to be friends with Liisa. I would think that first and the foremost!

That wasn’t the last strange thing that happened there. It was really weird to see Paula so good condition. She told herself she had drunk only one cider which could be true actually. Usually she had been the first drunk person but now for some reason she wasn’t here drinking alcohol like so many others were. So I was spending my Midsummer Eve with the nerd and the teenager alcoholic of my ex-class. And I had never liked that much each of them. There was still pretty much people around there and I saw many familiar faces there. All of a sudden Paula’s face turned out to look really odd.
- Eve, don’t look there! she yelled and turned me to look to other way.
- But why? I asked looking at her weird at the same time I was trying to find that dangerous object for my eyes. There were old schoolmates, girls from my floorball team, Pete with some brunette, more schoolmates…Wait a sec! My eyes went back to Pete whose arm was around that brunette girl.
- I’m sorry, I really tried to warn you, Paula said silently trying to avoid my look. It took a moment before I understood what she meant. Paula was still thinking I was together with Pete. Well, this was the moment I had waited so long to get my revenge.

I told Paula and Liisa to wait me there where they were, I wouldn’t stay long. I made a round through the crowd so I should meet Pete and his girl face to face. Poor Pete, he couldn’t realize my attack at all. I guess he just thought I was only going to say Happy Midsummer or something.
- How could you?!?! I yelled immediately when I was near enough to touch Pete.
Right after that I gave a bitch slap to his cheek. Hah! That was totally right for him! The most rewarding thing in the whole situation was Pete’s total surprise. He wasn’t exactly up to date with the situation. I was hoping his girlfriend would understand what I was trying to say.
- After all that what you did to me you’re treating me like this! I yelled and injustice filled my voice.
Wow, should I be an actress instead?
- Pete, you’re really unfair person. I hate you!!! I yelled for my last words before I ran out of the place.
There had become a little empty circle around us. Nobody wanted to get involved with our fight but many were interested in it. I went back to place where Paula and Liisa had stayed in. And there they were still standing. I turned around to see what was happening with Pete and I saw that brunette girl was lecturing Pete so badly. That’s what I wanted to happen. I couldn’t help myself to grin maliciously. You get what you want.

Paula was staring at me eyes wide open of amazement.
- Shouldn’t you be sad or something? she asked carefully.
- Of course not. Now I’m even more satisfied, I answered gladly.
- But Pete was cheating on you?
I shook my head refusing.
- He can’t cheat Eve if they have never been together, Liisa opened her mouth.
- But…? Paula was looking us both totally surprised.
How simple she could be sometimes!
- You were lecturing him a short while ago, Paula tried still.
- I didn’t mention anything about being together and cheating. It’s only their fault if their relationship will end because of that, I answered.
- Look, Eve build up that show so people wouldn’t think that they are together, Liisa explained for me.
It looked like she understood things much better.

I decided to leave home to sleep, I had completed my task. Besides I didn’t want to meet Pete anymore, he could easily be somewhere around here stalking me and demanding me to explain everything. I knew Pete so he could do everything he could to revenge on me. Maybe it would be wise to keep a low profile next weeks. It would be easy actually because I would start my summer job next week. I had managed to get a job for three weeks from our local cemetery. I would take care of the graves, water and root up the plants and so on. I would spend days there so avoiding Pete would be a piece of cake.

Next morning I woke up when Elina switched lights on and ran in like a hurricane.
- What the hell you, young lady, have done? she yelled to me in the middle of my room.
- I’m sleeping…I mumbled with sleepy voice and turned my rib to other side while I pulled the covers to my eyes.
- You aren’t sleeping now, we’ll talk right now, Elina was continuing her lecture.
- I think this sounds more arguing than talking, I muttered under my covers.
- EVELIINA AINO SOFIA MIETTINEN! GET UP RIGHT NOW! Elina roared.
- You should have gone to the Army, you would have been a sergeant right away because you’re commanding so well, I mumbled while rubbing my sleepy eyes and got up to sit on the bed. – Well, tell me?
- What the heck you were doing near the bonfire yesterday? Elina demanded to know.
- Oh, rumours are spreading pretty fast in this town, I said.
- Start to talk now! Elina yelled.
- Calm down for God’s sake and let me even wake up well. And why do you even want to know what happened there? I asked finally.
- That Pete’s girlfriend happened to be my friend, Elina explained with cool voice, and now you have spoiled their relationship.
So it had really worked. I couldn’t help anything else than burst into laughter.
- It’s only their own fault if they let my show to break their relationship, I said while wiping the tears of laugh from my eyes.
- Could you tell me also what did you say to Pete and why, please? Elina asked already calmed down.
I described to Elina a short, one-sided conversation and I saw how she was almost laughing.
- But why Eve? she sighed at last.
I looked at him long. – Of course because of that all would forget the imaginations about my and Pete’s so called relationship.
- You’re the most selfish person I’ve ever met! Elina yelled pissed off.
- Girls, girls. What are you yelling here? mom came to ask to my door.
- Elina wanted to talk with me, I said while a yawn was tearing my jawbones.
- Couldn’t you talk a bit more silently? mom suggested.
- I think this conversation is over from my side, Elina can continue it alone somewhere else, I said and went back under my covers. – And if you could switch the lights off before leaving, please, I mumbled.
- Eve, we’re going to talk about this later, Elina threatened before she closed the door.
I think we could talk about that even until the end of world but why it was a must to wake up to speak? How Elina had been even awake so early? It had been about ten in the morning when she had popped to my room. And why we had to talk about it still? We had already solved the main things a short while ago. Finally I fell asleep with these thoughts.

A couple of hours later I was already awake, the conversation with Elina had affected to my sleeping. She had luckily disappeared somewhere so I didn’t need to explain my actions more yet. But I couldn’t avoid Elina for the whole weekend but I had to argue with her more than once. She thought I should apologize to Pete for that I had caused that misunderstanding. And I got even angrier because of that suggestion. I really wasn’t going to explain my doings and sayings to anyone. If the misunderstanding had happened, what could I do anymore? On Sunday before Elina left she commanded to apologize to Pete. I muttered something unclear I hoped she would think I would talk with Pete. But that I wasn’t really going to do. I would start in my new job tomorrow so I wouldn’t be free anymore during the days. I had also got information that I had accepted to high school. I should stop by there next week to ratify that I was really coming there.

On Monday morning my alarm clock started to yell 7 o’clock sharp. I walked eye half closed to bathroom and from there I walked slowly to the kitchen. Mom was already awake, she had her last week before her holiday. Dad was already on his holiday so he was still sleeping. I poured coffee to a big mug and made a couple of sandwiches for my worst hungry. I sat down at the table and pulled the newspapers in front of me and started to go through it.
- Morning, mom said when she came to kitchen and saw me there.
- …ning, I mumbled for an answer.
- So you’re starting your job today, she continued speaking while pouring a cup of coffee for herself too.
- Mmm… I made some kind of sound while turned another page.
Mom continued speaking something unnecessary to hear so I closed my ears from it. She still couldn’t understand I wasn’t in the best shape in the mornings. Usually I could wake up properly after I had got a cup of coffee to my veins. Before that it was totally useless to try to talk with me, I could only answer with muttering and single words. This was caused because I hated to be wakening up by the alarm clock because usually the time was too early to wake up to my mind. Simply, I wasn’t a morning person at all.

I got myself awake enough that I pulled some clothes on me and gave a quick look to a mirror that I wouldn’t look like a total magpie before I left to cycle to the graveyard. I left there early enough before eight so I would be in time surely. The graveyard was on the other side of the town and I assumed it would take about 25 minutes to cycle there. Luckily it wasn’t raining and weather forecast hadn’t promised any rain for the upcoming days. The weather wasn’t warm even though the sun was shining. The wind was blowing from the north so it made the weather to feel colder.

I arrived to the graveyard in time and I got instructions what to do and where I would find necessary things to take care of the graves from. Besides I got specifications which area was mine because there were a couple of other girls working also. It would be frustrating if we cleaned the same graves all the time so the yard was divided to parts that we wouldn’t get confused with already cleaned and non-cleaned graves.

The day was passing by really fast and when I had my lunch break I sat gladly down on a bench to eat my box lunch. I could feel how the work affected to my back and when I finally came back home I went to lie on the hammock. I was totally exhausted after my first work day.
