Part 17

He paced up and down in the room. His blue eyes were locked on a point in the distance. He had heard about the killings. He knew the woman who’d nearly died. He knew the connection between Nicole and Anthony. He knew Alex. He knew the murderer. He shook his head. It just couldn’t be true. His cell mate looked at him. ‘Kowalski, for God’s sake, will you stop pacing up and down?’ Kowalski stopped walking, and looked at the wall. There was no window, no sunlight, just gray concrete walls. All three were decorated by words of hate by previous prisoners. Behind him was the door. It was made of steal, with a square which could be opened. Kowalski sighed, and sat down on the floor. The man looked at him. ‘Hey man, you ok? You ain’t fainting right?’ Kowalski shook his head. ‘No Ramon, I’m not..’ He looked up, into the face of his cell mate. The brown eyes looked worried, and his long hair had a greasy brown color. ‘What’s up? Somethin’ is bothering you, that’s for sure.’ Kowalski sighed. ‘C’mon Jan, it might help if you talk ‘bout it.’ Ramon said. Jan looked up again. ‘You know about the killings, don’t you?’ Ramon nodded, ‘Some guy killed a niece from that detective, Gaudet or somethin’. His partner is dead too.’ Jan nodded. ‘Gaudet is the one who got me in jail, together with Anthony Girard. The one who did this even tried to kill Nicole Éthier, his new partner.. I know who did this Ramon..’ Ramon raised an eyebrow. ‘No, not me, I wouldn’t even think about asking someone to kill those people. If I wanted to get my revenge, to get even, I’d kill Alexander Gaudet himself, not everyone he loves..’ He shook his head. ‘So, who did it then?’ Jan sighed again, and looked at the ceiling. ‘Kazimierz. Kazimierz Kowalski..’ It was quiet for a while. ‘Hold on a sec. Ain’t that your brother? Your brother is killing ‘em?’ Jan nodded. ‘Yes, and I’m afraid he is not done yet..’
