I had just hung up when Ana called me. ‘Maria! There’s someone for you!’ ‘Coming!’ I ran downstairs. I woman stood in front of the door. She had brow-greenish eyes and dark red hair, almost brown. ‘Hola! I’m Simone, nice to meet you!’ She smiled and shook my hand. ‘Uhh.. Nice to meet you Simone, I’m Maria..’ I was a little bit surprised. ‘Can I come in? I think we need to chat about yesterday..’ I looked again at her, and recognized her. ‘Sure, come in.’ We walked into the livingroom and sat down, me on the couch and she on a chair. She putted her bag down on the floor. It was an expensive bag, Prada. Ana walked inside from the kitchen. ‘Honey, I made tea for you two. It stands on the kitchen table.’ ‘Thanks mom.’ Ana smiled and walked to the hallway. ‘Do you want tea Simone?’ She nodded. I got up and got the mugs. ‘Where did you want to talk about?’ I asked her and sipped of my tea. ‘What you saw yesterday in the park.. That wasn’t what you thought it was.. Mikel and I are just friends. He tried to comfort me coz my boyfriend broke up with me the day before yesterday, and then my sister calls me to tell that my dad had a heart attack.. That was just another punch in my face.. And Mikel was really sweet and listened to me.. You are really lucky with him girl. Please say that you made it up!’ She looked shocked at me. ‘That’s awful.. I hope your dad gets better soon.. And I got a call this morning.. My friend told me to turn the TV on. There was their concert, live from Mallorca. Mikel was standing alone on the stage and he told that he had a fight with someone who’s really precious to him. Then he began to sing a song he had written for me.. I called him after it. He was crying on the phone. I forgave him though I’m still a bit pissed on him..’ Simone smiled and putted the mug down on the table. She took her bag. ‘Before he left to Mallorca, he asked me something.. Damn it! I serious need to clean my bag.. Ah, got it!’ she took a small box out of her bag and gave it to me. I stared at her and then at the thing in my hands. ‘C’mon! Open it!’ Curious I opened it. First I saw a piece of paper and began to read.

I wrote that song on our way to Mallorca. I really hope you liked it..
I’m so sorry my love.. I didn’t do it on purpose.. And I don’t wanna
lose you coz of this.. I hope you like this.. It’s something to replace the bracelet.

I looked again into the box. A golden necklace, with a small cross, heart and anchor, was lying in it. ‘Hope, faith and love..’ I smiled and took it out of the box. Simone helped me to put it on my neck. ‘O, before I forget: I had to say this from our Casanova.. ‘I hope your faith in me didn’t died, just like our love: It will last forever..’ Too sweet if you ask me..’ she shook her head and took her mug. I smiled and said: ‘The boys are right: He is a romantico!’ We both laughed. I was still a little bit angry at him but now I understood what happened, I could forgive him sooner. And besides: I’ve never been angry at him for longer then a day. He just uses his irresistible smile and puppy eyes coz he knows I can’t resist that.

Capνtulo 20

Simone and I became good friends. She was a sweet girl with a lot of energy. After three weeks I found a house near the beach and also near Ana. It wasn’t big nor fancy. It was a cute and small house, build of white stones. It had a small backyard and a balcony at the master bedroom. My favorite flowers grew in the garden: Roses. White, red, yellow, pink: Almost every color. Also some herbs grew in it. I found work in Cαdiz. I worked for the SVU and although it didn’t looked like Crime Scene Investigator, I liked ik a lot.


We were having dinner with the whole family at my place. So Ans and Mikel were also sitting around the table. I made dinner, together with Ana. We were chatting and having fun when suddenly Ans dropped her fork. Her hand went to her belly. ‘Everything okay darling?’ Basty asked her. ‘Yes, yes.. Ahh! I think our baby wants to say hello.. It’s time..’ ‘WHAT?! Now?!’ Basty panicked. ‘I’ll drive.. A: Because Basty drank two beers and B: Coz you’re with the motor, right?’ Basty nodded. I got up and grabbed my car keys. We walked outside and got into the car. I had bought a new one because I had to leave my Mercedes behind. Now I had an Audi Q5. As fast as the speed limit let me I drove to the hospital. Quick we got out of the car and brought Ans inside. It was good that Ana, Mikel and I were with Ans and Basty: Basty was so stressed out that he forgot the most important thing: His wife. Mikel and I took her inside. Basty came running back. ‘I forgot something!’ He was so confused. ‘No worry mate, we have your wife and Ana has the clothes..’ Mikel pushed Basty forward. Not much later a doctor came and took Ans and Basty into a room. Ana, Mikel and I were waiting outside. Ana went to get some coffee for herself. ‘Mar? Do you.. Do you want to have little kids someday?’ He looked at me. ‘Yeah.. Someday.. Now I want to get my life back on the rails.. And spend some time with you..’ I smiled. Mikel smiled back and took my hand. ‘I love you Maria…’ He caressed my hand with his thumb. Ana came back with coffee for Mikel and me. She handed us the mugs and sat down. Just on the moment Mikel and I took a sip we heard some weird sounds in the room. We sprang up and ran to the door. You could hear Basty sing. The door opened and Basty looked at us. He was smiling from ear to ear. ‘It’s a boy!’ He opened the door further and we got inside. Ans was holding a little baby boy in her arms. Ana sat down on the bed and looked at her grandson. ‘I can’t believe I’m a granny now..’ She smiled and a tear of happiness rolled over her cheek. ‘His name is Rafael Lars Piρero Camacho, but we call him Lars.. My nephew has the same name and I adore him so much..’ I looked at the little baby in her arms. He had a blue bonnet on his head, Basty’s nose, Ans her lips: A mixture of both.. Not much later we left mother, son and father alone, and went home. I brought Ana home. ‘I wanna stay with you tonight darling.. I haven’t seen you longer then a few houres after we came back from our tour..’ I parked the car and we walked inside. It was still warm. ‘Shall we go to the beach? I have a present which I haven’t tested yet..’ Mikel nodded and we walked inside. I took the bag Eva had given me and took the wet suit out of it. ‘Since when can you surf?’ Mikel looked surprised at me. ‘I learned it in California, when I was there on a short break with my sister and best friend.. I also took dive lessons there.. The Pacific Ocean is beautiful!’ Mikel still looked surprised. I began to laugh. ‘Man! You saw more of the world then me! The Netherlands, Spain, Australia, America.. I can only dream of making those journeys..’ ‘Darling, you forgot a few countries.. My parents took me and Lynn on vacations to Portugal, Wales, Finland, France, Italy, Lithuania..’ I walked to my bedroom. Mikel followed me. Quick I changed my clothes, took the surfboard of the wall and walked downstairs. We walked to the beach. Mikel sat down on the beach and I ran into the water to catch some waves. After a while I walked back on the beach. Mikel was lying on the sand. He looked at me, with one eye closed. ‘Shall we go back?’ I nodded. He got up and laid his arm around me. Together we walked back to my house. I unlocked the door and Mikel pushed me inside. He closed the door and took me into the livingroom. ‘I can see someone missed me a lot..’ I smiled. Mikel smiled too and pressed his lips against mine. I kissed him back. He tried to take my wet suit off. I helped him to open the zipper. He took it off and pushed me down on the couch. In his eyes shined a boyish mischievous. ‘What’s mister Hennet gonna do now, now he undressed his girl?’ He smiled and said: ‘Enjoy of her..’ He got up and pulled me up. He lifted me in his arms and carried me into the bedroom. Finally we were together again, at least for longer then a couple of houres.

Also Hen and Javi got married. Mikel tried to make a couple of Ony and Simone, and after a few forced dates together with me and Mikel they admitted to like each other more then friends. Three months after I came back Mikel took me on a romantic picnic with the motor. He had his own now: A Suzuki.


We were sitting on a hill, with a romantic view on the old castle. Mikel had brought a basket earlier that night. I saw it because we lived together since two months. He had his arm around me and I sat there with my head against his shoulder. ‘It’s so beautiful here..’ I said and sighed. ‘You’re more darling.. You are as beautiful as a rose.. As a soft summer breeze, as one of the most beautiful paintings in a museum. And I wanna be the rest of my life with you..’ He removed his arm and pulled me up. He looked me in my eyes. I saw he was nervous. I also felt butterflies in my stomach as I had a feeling of what would come now. Mikel went down on his knee. ‘We are together for such a long time. We survived a long distance relation, survived jealousy.. We are meant to be together.. At least I think so.. And I hope you think the same about us Maria.. I wanna be with you for a life time, protect you against everything and everyone. I would cross the hottest fire, dive into the coldest ocean, walk a million miles through the desert… I would just do anything to protect you. And the beginning of that list is here.. Let’s start with one simple thing..’ He sighed, closed his eyes and got a tiny black box out of the pocket from his motor jacket. ‘My dearest Rosa Maria Piρero Camacho.. Do you wanna be my wife? Will you marry me?’ And he opened the box. A golden ring was in it, with a small stone. I swapped my hand in front of my mouth. ‘Oh, Mikel.. I don’t know what to say.. Yes.. Yes, of course! Come here silly!’ He got up and kissed me. I kissed him back. Mikel shove the ring on my finger. We both smiled and he wiped a lonely happiness tear of my cheek. We sat back down and continued the picnic. Not much later we began to put the stuff back into the basket and climb on the bike. Mikel started the engine and we drove away. After a while we arrived at a dangerous point. Mikel didn’t saw the black car who came from left, and I got smashed away for five meters. Vague on the background I could hear running footsteps, a car door slamming, the siren of an ambulance and then it’s quiet. I felt how they lifted me up and laid me on a stretcher. Mikel whispered my name. I tried to open my eyes. ‘Mikel.. Mikel.. Please.. Help..’ A tear rolled over my cheek. Finally I opened my eyes and saw him sitting next to me, holding my hand. ‘It will be okay honey.. Shh.. It will all be okay..’ Also he had tears in his eyes. ‘Don’t cry.. Big boys.. Don’t.. Cry..’ I tried to comfort him. I felt how my strength was getting weaker and weaker. I tried to caress his hand with my thumb but I just fainted. ‘Beeeeeeeeeeep!’ ‘NOOO!! Mar! Stay with me.. I can’t-..’
‘Hello my dear.. It’s so good to see you again..’ My mother was standing next to me. ‘What the hell?! Where is my jeans? And my I love London T-shirt? And where am I?’ I looked around me. It was like I was standing in the air and looked down on myself. At least it looked like me. It was a girl with blonde half long wavy hair, here eyes closed. She was holding the hand of a man, and had a golden ring on her right hand. ‘Is that.. me?’ ‘Yes honey: That’s you. And don’t you like that white dress?’ ‘No! I don’t even wanna be dead! He proposed me! Mom, my life isn’t over yet.. It was just getting started..’ ‘Darling, it’s your destiny to leave earth now.. And come with me and your father..’ ‘I survived a rape, a huge fight, jealousy, a long distance relation with a man who truly loves me and all my bad sides. And I crash with a motor and it’s my time to go? Come on! I won’t give up fighting mom.. It’s my fucking destiny and live! And that means I WILL DESIDE! NOT you!’ She shook her head. ‘You still have the same temper.. You can’t decide when it’s your time honey. God does.. Together with the Death angel… They sent me.. I’m sorry..’ I stared at her. My eyes went below me. I looked at the man.
‘Don’t give up my love.. I love you.. I love you so much.. You are the first girl who didn’t turned me down, who didn’t crushed my heart.. Who said she loved me too, and will stay with me till dead separates us.. Keep on fighting.. For you, for our love.. For the live we will have together.. Please, I’m begging you corazσn.. Please..’ Mikel began to cry.
‘Mooom! How can you crush his heart! Mine belongs to him, and his to me.. Let me go back, please mom..’ I felt the tears rolling over my eyes. I fell on my knees. ‘Please, I wanna go back.. Back to him.. Back to my family..’

omg.. i can't believe that a tear rolled in my cheek right now! this part was so amazing and sad.. she must live!!!!!

I heard Mikel singing quietly a part of a song.
‘Empty spaces fill me up with holes
Distant faces with no place left to go
Without you within me I can’t find no rest
Where I’m going is anybody’s guess

I’ve tried to go on like I never knew you
I’m awake but my world is half asleep
I pray for this heart to be unbroken
But without you all I’m going to be is in.. in.. incom-.. I can’t.. I’m sorry Mar..’ He let go of my hand and buried his face in his hands.
‘How can you be so cruel mom? How?’ The tears were streaming over my cheeks. She looked at me with her warm blue eyes. ‘Go darling.. I see now how much you two care about each other.. Go.. And I wish you all the luck from the world together..’ I still looked at her. ‘But.. I thought that.. Really? I can go back?’ She nodded. She became vaguer by the minute and after a few minutes she was gone. ‘Bye Maria! We love you!’ I tried to open my eyes and mumbled something.

You still wonder if.. if we made a big mistake’ I slowly opened my eyes. Mikel smiled through his tears. I smiled back. ‘You know I’ll never could leave you sweetheart..’ I closed my eyes again. ‘I’m so tired.. So tired.. And my head.. It hurts.. Just like the rest of my body..’ Mikel pressed his finger against my lips. ‘Shh.. It’s allright.. We are almost in the hospital honey.. Then they will stop the pain, and take the tiredness away.. Shh..’ Mikel hushed me until they rode me into the operation room.


Mikel was sitting on a chair, waiting till the moment they would come back out with his girl. He couldn’t take the stress anymore and began to walk. He found a small church inside the hospital. He opened the door and walked inside. Mikel sat down on a wooden bench, somewhere in the back of the church. It was so nicely calm there that he came to himself again. Again he got up and walked to the altar to lit a candle. He folded his hands and began to pray in silence. After a while he sighed and opened his eyes. He got up and walked outside the small room to sit and wait again. He took his mobile and dialed a number. ‘Amigo.. You have to come here.. I have bad news.. Mar and I had an accident..’

Basty and Ana came as soon as they could. The doctors were finally done and the doors opened. ‘Hello sir. I’m doctor Patineau. The surgery went fine. Your wife will be okay and recover perfectly. Her first, third and fourth rib is broken and she had a small crack in her meniscus. Over six weeks from now she will be able to walk with you out of this hospital.’ The doctor smiled. Mikel thanked him and followed my bed into the room. I was still sleeping. Vague I heard someone calling me. ‘Maria.. Maria! Darling, it’s time to wake up..’ I tried to ignore the voice. I was so tired that I could sleep for a lifetime. ‘Come on.. let me hear your sexy voice.’ It made me smile. I tried to hide it but I couldn’t. I opened one eye and also the other. ‘Hola! Welcome back on earth.’ Mikel smiled at me. ‘You have a couple of broken ribs, so be careful with speaking.’ I nodded. My head was painful as hell, must be from the fact I smashed my head on the ground when I was thrown away, and I had a bandage around my knee and chest. ‘How are you?’ I asked him. ‘Only a headache, a bit dizzy, nauseous and a couple of scratched and bruises.’ The door opened and a part of my family walked inside. Ana had tears in her eyes. ‘Mom, don’t cry.. I’m still here..’ I smiled brave. ‘It was close.. Your heart stopped.. I was begging you to come back, and when I lost the hope there was a heart beat again..’ Ana and Basty sat down. ‘How’s my sis doing?’ ‘A few broken ribs, my head is aching and something’s wrong in my knee, but further I’m fine.. O, and I’m engaged.’ I smiled. ‘You sneaky fox! Show me..’ I showed Basty the ring. ‘I’m happy for you honey.’ Tears were floating over her cheeks. ‘So.. Mikel will be family now?’ Basty asked. I nodded. ‘My name will be Rosa Maria Camacho-Hennet. Man, that sounds good.’ Ana smiled through her tears. Again the door opened and also Hen, Javi, Ony, Sabine and Ans walked inside. Even my three months old nephew was there. Ans laid him on my bed. ‘Let’s hope mister Piρero wants to sleep now.. He missed his dad to tell him one of his never ending stories. Sometimes he’s gone for almost three houres!’ Basty blushed and took his son. He started to tell a story and we all listened. ‘A very, very long time ago, there lived a lonely turtle. She was really sad because she didn’t had friends. On a warm sunny day she began to make a walk. After three days she arrived in the next forest, because turtles are very sloooow..’ Ans smiled. ‘Let him.. This can go on for ages..’ ‘Where is my beloved dorky bro?’ Mikel asked. ‘He’s on the sea.. I thought you knew he worked in the navy?’ ‘Yeah, I did.. I only didn’t knew he was away.. But how are you doing? We haven’t talked for months!’ Sabine smiled and answered: ‘That’s what you get when you live in Spain and I in Puerto de la Cruz.. I’m here on a business trip and wanted to visit my old friends. But that I had to meet one like this..’ I smiled back. ‘How are you two?’ I asked Hen and Javi. ‘Can I tell now? I wanna tell and I already had to wait way too long..’ He looked at his wife. ‘Okay, okay. Tell them.. He’s so immature sometimes, but that’s why I love him: He’s just as crazy as I am.’ She chuckled. ‘Are you done making fun of me and my impatient? Good.. Prepaaare! It’s such a good thing! Me.. Is gonna be.. a.. DADDY! Tadaa!’ He smiled widely. ‘No way! Daddy Javi? Mate, that’s wicked awesome!’ Ony said. I smiled about the expressions on their faces. Mikel and I looked at each other. ‘Can I tell? Pleasepleasepleasepleaseplease?’ ‘You are still the little child you were on high school, aren’t you? Okay, tell them!’ I smiled. ‘We have also super-wicked-fantastic news! Basty will be my brother-in-law!’ He was almost jumping on his chair. ‘Are you trying to fudging kill me?! First he’s becoming a dad and now you two are engaged?!’ Ony’s eyes were about to pop out of his head. We began to laugh. I laid my hands on my chest to stop my ribs from aching. Soon my laugh changed into coughing. They stopped and looked worried at me. I took a deep breath and calmed down. ‘I’m fine, really..’ ‘I think it’s time for us to leave. I’ll tell Ruben and Isabel that you’re lying here. Probably they will visit you.’ Sabine said and winked. I got a sort of kiss from my nephew. ‘Bye Lars! Aunty Maria will come to play with you soon.. Let’s play a game now, okay? Who’s first asleep.. 1..2..3: Start!’ Quick he closed his eyes and fell asleep. Basty smiled and carried him to the car. ‘I still don’t know how you do that..’ Ans said and she followed them. Hen and Javi gave me a hug –one of his big bear hugs. O, I love them..- and left. Also Sabine and Ony left. Ana gave me a kiss on my forehead. ‘I love you cariρo.. Get better soon.’ And she walked out of the room. Like a real nurse Mikel laid my pillows good and pulled the blanket over me. He was about to leave when I said: ‘Mikel? Do you wanna stay here tonight?’ He smiled and walked back. He shove a chair closer to my bed and sat down. Softly he began to sing for me. I began to feel sleepy and closed my eyes. Mikel’s voice was getting vaguer and vaguer until it was quiet.

After six weeks I could leave the hospital. Mikel picked me up by car. Three months later we got married. It was a beautiful day. Mikel and I were really happy together. Of course we had fights every now and then. I mean; which couple doesn’t have them? Almost a year later our happiness got bigger: I gave birth to a perfect healthy baby girl. We called her Sarah, that was one of Mikel’s best friends in the UK. Sarah had my blue eyes, mixed with a tiny bit of green and Mikel’s brown hair.

‘Mama? When is daddy coming back?’ The three year old Sarah asked me while I was doing the laundry. Mikel and I tried to learn her three languages: Spanish of course, Dutch because it was my native language, and English. She always used two languages in one sentence. ‘Sweetheart, daddy has a tour… Maybe he will call tonight. Or we will call him, okay? Maybe you can speak with uncle Basty too!’ She nodded and walked back to the table to continue with drawing. I felt a terrible headache coming up. I had them more often lately. I tried to ignore the pain and continued with the laundry.

That evening, just after dinner, the phone rang. ‘Can I take it mama?’ I nodded. Sarah walked to the phone and answered it. ‘Hello?’ ‘Hello! How’s my little girl doing?’ ‘I’m fine. Mama has a head-pain.. When are you coming back daddy? And uncle Basty?’ ‘We will be back next week, okay darling? Wait.. Basty wants to talk with his niece..’ He gave the phone to Basty. ‘Hello there! How are you sweety?’ ‘I’m fine uncle Basty. Tell daddy to come home soon. He have to help mama with her auwie-head.. I have to go now. It’s almost sleep-time for me.. And I’m tired of helping mummy with the dishes.’ ‘Sleep well! Shall I tell daddy that you love him? Mikel! Sarah says she loves you!’ ‘Good night uncle Basty! Good luck with the ehmm.. With the thing you are doing with daddy, Javi and Ony..’ ‘The tour you mean?’ Sarah nodded. I smiled. ‘Sarah, Basty can’t see you are nodding. Shall I talk with him now?’ She gave the phone to me. ‘Heya sis! Wait, I’ll give you Mikel..’ Some strange sounds, Basty yelling Mikel and then his voice. ‘Hola darling! How are you?’ ‘Heya! I’m okay.. Only one of those headaches.. I have them quite often now..’ ‘We will see the doctor when I’m back, okay? I’m sorry honey, I got to go now.. I love my girls. Bye!’ ‘Bye.. We love you too..’ And I hung up. I sat down on the couch. Sarah climbed on my lap. Tears were rolling over my cheeks. Sarah wiped them away. ‘Why are you crying mummy?’ ‘Mama is tired honey.. Come, let’s go to bed.. Tonight you can sleep with mummy, okay?’ I took her hand and we walked upstairs. I putted her pajama on and she laid down in my bed. Quick also I changed my clothes and laid down next to her. She laid closely against me and closed her eyes. Not much later she was asleep. I turned the radio on. Softly it played a CD. ‘Far away’ by Nickelback. I always have loved that song from them. I held my daughter in my arms and fell asleep.
