Dave kept an eye on us the whole ride. It freaked me out. Soon we arrived at the farm. Some people were waiting outside. Dave stopped the car and we got out of it. ‘Maria, this are Raϊl, Kevin, Stevie, Charlotte, Kate and Tess. Guys, this is my sister Maria.’ She pointed at the persons when she said their names. ‘Nice to meet you.’ I smiled. They seemed nice people. ‘Welcome on the farm.’ Tess said. ‘Why do I have the feeling that you’re from Spain?’ Raϊl asked me with a thoughtful face. ‘Maybe coz I’m from Spain.. I used to live there.’ I smiled. ‘Huh? But you are Dutch from origin right?’ Stevie asked me. ‘Yes, I am.. It’s quite a long story.. But I think you know a part of it.. But can we go inside first? I want something to drink before I’ll tell this story.’ Everybody smiled and we walked inside. Dave followed us with my luggage. He putted them down at the stairway and followed us into the dining room. Everybody sat down around the table. Lynn gave me a bottle of cola and I took a few sips before I began to tell. ‘… And that’s why you have the idea I’m from Spain..’ I ended the story and looked at Raϊl. ‘Wow.. I knew about your parents.. But not about the rest..’ Raϊl looked at me. I smiled. ‘Okay, enough chitchat.. There’s work to do guys..’ Dave said and everybody got up, except Raϊl. ‘Also for you Raϊl..’ ‘No Dave.. I’m done for today.. And by the way, I have to go back to Killarney soon.. Harry needs me there with the cows. Sorry mate..’ He got up and walked outside. I also got up and walked into the hall. ‘I’m gunna bring my stuff to my room, where ever it may be..’ Dave smiled and said: ‘I’ll show you your room. Follow me.’ He walked upstairs with two of my suitcases and I followed him with the other. He opened the door of one of the many rooms. ‘This is your new bedroom. I hope you’ll like it.’ And he putted the suitcases down. I walked inside. It was quite a big room with a double bed, a big closet, radio, bedside table, desk and chair, bookcase and a make-up table. It was gray colored with white curtains. The window was open and you could smell the countryside. I also putted the suitcase down. I sat down on my bed. ‘I love it. Thanks..’ Dave smiled and walked out of the room, back down stairs. I got up, closed the door and sighed. ‘Creep..’ I mumbled and laid my suitcases on the bed, opened it and began to unpack it.

‘Mar! Are you coming for dinner?’ I looked at my watch. It was 17.30. Dinner? Now? ‘Coming!’ I putted the last book in the bookcase and walked downstairs. ‘Are you always eating so early?’ I said while I walked into the dining room. Lynn smiled and answered: ‘Usually yes.. Sometimes it’s late when we have time to eat..’ I sat down next to Kevin and saw what we were gonna eat. ‘Who cooked this?’ I asked. ‘I did.. Raϊl gave me the recipe.’ Kate said. ‘Let’s hope we don’t get poisoned..’ Kevin looked frightened at the pan in the middle of the table. ‘C’mon.. Paella isn’t that bad.. It’s quite tasty!’ I smiled and poked him between his ribs. He rubbed over it. ‘Yeah, sure.. Well.. Never try, never know.. Gimme some of it.’ And he gave his plate to Lynn who gave him some of the paella. We all looked at him while he ate it. ‘If I won’t survive it, give my stuff to charity.. And tell Raϊl.. That he’s weird..’ he took a bite and closed his eyes. ‘Am I still on my chair?’ he opened one eye and looked around. ‘Hey! I’m not dead! Well.. Not YET..’ He also opened the other and looked around. He swallowed the food. ‘Maria, you’re right. It’s quite tasty! Forget what I said about my stuff.. I’ll keep it all. Something so tasty can’t be deadly, right? Right?’ I laughed. ‘I don’t think so, no..’ Kevin sighed and ate the rest of the food on his plate. These guys felt like my second home.

‘Maria, I have a surprise for you..’ Lynn smiled mysterious to me and took my hand. The others followed us outside. Lynn took me to the boxes of the horses. One of them had a blue bow. She let go of my hand and walked to the door. The others came standing around me. ‘Because you’ll help us around here, I thought that you could need this..’ and she opened the door. Curious I walked closer to Lynn and looked inside. Inside stood a beautiful light brown horse. ‘Her name is Mango. Kevin made that name up.’ The horse looked at me with her friendly brown eyes. I caressed her head. ‘Thanks Lynn. And you too guys..’ I gave Lynn a hug. I also hugged the others. Even Dave although I didn’t liked him that much. ‘I also have a saddle for you and a halter..’ She showed me the way to them. ‘Can I go and ride with Mango?’ I asked Lynn. ‘I’ll go with her so she won’t get lost here.’ Kevin said. ‘Okay. Have fun!’ Lynn and the others walked back inside and Kevin helped me to saddle Mango. ‘You know how to ride?’ ‘Yes.. I had lessons for a couple of years in Holland..’ We got on our horses and drove away.

Soon we arrived somewhere on a hill and we looked at the farm. ‘Do you like it?’ Kevin asked me. ‘Yes.. For somehow it feels like home..’ Kevin smiled: ‘Good to hear. But uhmm..’ I looked at him. ‘What’s up mate?’ ‘I don’t wanna scare you but.. well.. Just be careful with Dave.. I don’t think he’s an angel.. And if he is, you can shoot me..’ I smiled. ‘Kevin, I will.. And I think you might be right about him.. I don’t trust him either.. But Lynn loves him..’ I sighed. ‘Okay.. Just so you know.. Shall we go back? I think you’re tired. The difference in time between Spain and Australia is quite big..’ ‘Good idea.. A nice shower and straight bed.. I’m broken..’ We drove back to Wilgul. I putted Mango in her box and after I took care of her I walked inside. ‘Hi. How was your ride on Mango?’ Lynn asked me. ‘It was great! But if you guys don’t mind, I’m off to bed..’ I stretched my arms and walked out of the dining room. Dave looked weird at me. What’s wrong with that guy?! Kevin noticed it too and gave me a look who said: be careful. Remember what I told you.. I nodded and walked upstairs. I opened the door of my bedroom and saw something lying on my bed. It was a cowboy hat. I smiled and laid it on my bedside table. Quick I took a shower and got into bed. I stared at the ceiling and a tear rolled over my cheek. How I missed Ana and Basty.. And Mikel too.. That night I cried myself into sleep and dreamed about them.

‘Mar.. Wake up..’ I turned around. ‘Basty, let me sleep for one time.. Please?’ ‘Basty?!’ I opened my eyes and looked at the person next to my bed. ‘You’re not Basty..’ ‘Who is Basty?’ Lynn asked me. I rubbed my eyes. ‘He’s my brother.. Sort of..’ ‘Oh.. That guy! Now I know who you mean.. But are you coming? There’s a lot of work to do..’ ‘Yep.. Be there in a sec.’ Lynn walked out of my room and I got out of my bed. Quick I took a jeans and a T-shirt, and putted it on after I took a shower. Cowboy hat and shoes in my hand and I walked out of my room. ‘Morning!’ I said and walked into the room. ‘Coffee?’ Lynn asked and hold a mug up. ‘Err.. No, thanks.. I’ll take some milk or juice if you don’t mind.’ I took the bottle with orange juice and poured some in a glass. Together with some toast I sat down at the table. ‘What’s that around your wrist?’ Stevie asked me while she looked at it. I swallowed the toast and replied: ‘It’s a bracelet.. My boyfriend gave it to me after our graduation, so I won’t forget about him while he’s in England and I’m here..’ Stevie smiled. ‘That’s so cute!’ she said and drank the rest of her coffee. ‘I’m going to shave those sheeps.. Kate, Tess? Can you help me?’ They nodded and walked away. Dave finished his breakfast. ‘Honey, I’m off to the city for business.. I’ll try to be home for dinner. Promised!’ He gave her a kiss and walked out of the door. ‘I need to do.. Stuff.. Bye!’ and also Kevin left. I looked at Lynn and pointed at the door. ‘What’s wrong with him?’ I asked her. Lynn shrugged. ‘I really have no idea.’ She drank her tea. ‘Good.. So what’s on today?’ ‘We need to shave the sheeps –but Stevie, Tess and Kate are already doing that, we need to bring the cows to the paddock and Harry called me early this morning.. He needs some help. Don’t ask with what, he only said that I had to send one of you..’ ‘I’ll go to Harry, if you don’t mind..’ ‘No not at all..’ she smiled. ‘Maybe Kevin can bring you, I don’t think you know the way to Killarney?’ I shook my head. ‘Good. Finish your breakfast, than I’ll ask Kevin to bring you.’ She got up and walked out of the room. Quick I finished my breakfast and walked outside while I putted the hat on my head. ‘Kevin will bring you. Come and saddle your horse.’ She walked with me to the stables. As fast as I could I saddled Mango and walked with her to Kevin. ‘Good, I’ll bring you to Killarney.’ I got up and we took off.


‘Harry has two sons: Nick and Alex. Both are taken. Tess has a relation with Nick and Stevie with Alex. Alex and Nick live on Drover’s. Harry’s farm is quite big.. Raϊl is one of his employees. And there are a few more. You have Rob, Duncan and Peter. I hope you’ll survive it.. Harry can be a bully sometimes.’ He smiled. ‘I’m sure I will. Don’t worry mate.’ We arrived at Harry’s farm. Kevin didn’t misplaced the word ‘big’ in the sentence ‘His farm is quite big’.. ‘Well, good luck!’ he smiled and rode back to the farm. ‘Yeah, thanks mate..’ I got off Mango and bound her to a tree. I collected all my courage and walked to the door. Harry was sitting on a chair, drinking coffee. ‘Hello sir. I’m Maria, from Wilgul.. Lynn sent me?’ Harry putted his cup down and looked at me. ‘You must be her sister, right?’ I nodded. ‘Good. You can help Raϊl.. He’s in the northern paddock.’ He gave me a description to get there and I walked back outside. Together with Mango I rode to the paddock. ‘Hola!’ Raϊl looked up and waved. ‘You need some help?’ I asked and got of Mango. Raϊl nodded and walked to me. ‘So Lynn sent you?’ ‘Yep.. So what are you doing?’ He began to explain it and told me what to do.


‘Ring,ring.. Ring,ring,ring..’ I got up from the ground where we were sitting to have lunch and took my phone. ‘Hello? Maria speaking..’ I looked at Raϊl. ‘Hola!’ A smile appeared on my face. ‘Hola bro!’ immediately I switched from English to Spanish. ‘How’s Australia so far?’ ‘I’m here for two days! How do I have to know! Okay.. It’s nice here, but I miss Spain though..’ ‘Good that it’s nice there.. Javi, not now.. I’m on the phone! Can’t you see?’ I laughed. ‘Is Javi playing blonde again?’ Basty sighed at the other side of the phone. ‘Kinda.. Wait, he wants to speak with you.. Here ya go..’ I heard some weird sounds and than a familiar voice. ‘Heya chica! Quι tal?’ ‘Hola Javi! Yes, everything’s fine over here.. And with you?’ ‘Also. So, how’s the music over there?’ ‘Javi, I arrived yesterday.. Do you really think that I went to a disco to check the music here? The only thing I did was talk, eat, go horse-riding and than I went to bed.. I was tired as hell.’ ‘I know.. Just joking. Horse-riding eh? Do you have your own horse or..?’ ‘Yep, my own.. Her name is Mango.’ ‘Nice.. Wait, Ony wants to talk with you too.. I’ll give him the phone now..’ Again strange sounds and another familiar voice. ‘Hey! What did I hear? Your own horse?’ ‘Yep.. She’s really sweet. So are the guys on my sis’ farm.. I can get along pretty good with one of them.’ ‘Oh, good to hear.. I hope she’s kind for you during those years..’ ‘It’s a boy Ony, not a girl.. We can be friends with boys too dude..’ ‘Yeah, yeah.. Sorry.. Forgot.. Only friends?’ I heard a teasing tone in his voice while he said that. ‘Be happy that I’m at the other side of the world, otherwise you would so regret that comment mister! And yes, I’ll behave like a good girlfriend.. You know just as good as I know that I love him very much..’ ‘Sorry amiga.. I better had shut it.. Basty’s looking angry at me.. I’ll give him the phone back and run before he will hit me! Ciao!’ ‘Hey, here’s me again.. Sorry about Ony’s comment.. You know how he is sometimes..’ ‘Ah, I don’t mind.’ ‘Good.. By the way.. Mikel had called me from England that he arrived well. He really likes Southampton and I had to tell you that he loves you very much.. He had only a few mins to call me, so he couldn’t call you..’ I smiled and said: ‘Good that he likes it there.. When he calls you again, tell him that I love him too. Probably he won’t call me coz between us is a time difference of 12 houres. Maybe more..’ ‘Yeah, you’re right. Okay I’ll give him the message. Anything else?’ ‘Yeah, actually yes.. Tell mom I love her and that I miss her.. And I miss you too bro.. Lynn woke me this morning and my reaction was like: ‘Basty, let me sleep for once.. Please?’ And she was like: ’Basty?!’ And I was like: ‘You’re not Basty..’ when I opened my eyes.’ I heard him laughing. ‘That’s incredible! Serious! But I really have to hang you.. This is costing a fortune.. I’ll tell mom the message. And I miss you too.. There’s no one to wake in the morning, or to teas when she’s drooling about Mikel..’ ‘Oh! Take that back! Wait.. Can I have Javi again?’ He gave the phone to Javi. ‘Mate, listen.. Do you wanna do me a favor? Hit Basty with a pillow and say that he deserved it. Special deliver from Australia. Deal?’ ‘Okay, I will.’ I heard him grin. He gave Basty the phone. ‘Well, I’m going to hang you. Ciao sis! Love ya!’ ‘Love you too bro! Good luck with your training! Bye bye!’ and I pressed the red button. I sat back down. ‘Let me guess.. Your brother?’ ‘Yep.. And two of his friends..’ A tear rolled over my cheek. ‘I miss them a lot..’ Raϊl pulled me against himself and comforted me. ‘I know.. I miss my family too.. They live in Argentina.’ I smiled and whipped my tears away. ‘Thanks Raϊl..’ He smiled and got up. ‘Come.. there’s work to do, and if we won’t finish it, Harry will get angry as hell at me.. And maybe also at you..’ I took my hat and got up. ‘Let’s finish it then!’ And we walked back into the paddock.

Months past by, day by day. Each of them filled with work. It was October, and the autumn was coming closer. The temperature wasn’t very warm anymore, but it wasn’t cold either. Kevin and I became very close friends. Still I had a feeling that he liked me more than a friend, but he could hide it pretty good if it was true.

Friday night. It was snooker night in the pub. Kevin and Raϊl had taught me the game. Together with Stevie we drove to the small city. Cars were parked everywhere near the small pub. The owner, Andrew, was serving behind the bar while his wife, Ceri, served the tables. Raϊl locked his car and we walked inside. The good thing about going out here is that you don’t have to go all dressed up. Most of the men are wearing filthy jeans and shirts or T-shirts. Sometimes the women are a bit dressed up, but that’s quite rare. I wore a simple old blue jeans, blocked blouse and my cowboy booths -Lynn had bought them for me coz I would need them.. I liked them but didn’t see the use of it. ‘What do you wanna drink?’ Ceri was standing at our table. Raϊl and Kevin both wanted a beer. So did Stevie. ‘Cola.’ Ceri smiled and walked away. The guys laughed and looked at me. ‘C’mon! I’m 18, and I don’t like alcohol that much..’ ‘Ok.. We get it.’ Kevin winked. Soon Ceri came back with the drinks and putted them on the table.


‘Mar! Let’s play snooker. I’ll kick your ass!’ Kevin laughed. ‘Na-ah mate. I’ll kick your’s!’ Raϊl and Stevie were laughing about the expression on Kevin’s face. ‘Watch out, she’s dangerous with games.. I noticed last week.’ Raϊl warned his friend. He looked at him. ‘So that’s why you were so pissed last week? I’ll watch out..’ Raϊl made a face and we walked to the table.

After a while it seemed that Kevin should win. Raϊl and Stevie came to watch the game. Also the others came and saw us standing at the table. ‘What did you say mate? She’s dangerous? Don’t think so.. Look, I’m winning!’ Raϊl looked shocked at me and saw the twinkle in my eyes. He smiled and shook his head. He knew I wasn’t going to give up. It was my turn. I was one point behind him. ‘Huh? I thought I could win this game!’ Kevin was confused. ‘Mate, I told you that she’s dangerous with games..’ While laughing we walked back to the table. The others came sitting with us. After we had some drinks, we drove back to the farm.

The next morning:

I was taking a shower. I just had putted the shampoo in my hair when someone began to scream. Quick I turned the water off and wrapped a towel around me. I ran to the screaming. ‘What’s the matter?’ I ran into the room. Kevin was staring at the ceiling. Shampoo dripped of my head. ‘Sp-Sp-Spider.. Over there!’ And he pointed at the ceiling. ‘A spider?’ On the ceiling sat a spider. He wasn’t small nor big. I sighed. ‘It’s only a spider!’ ‘I know! But.. I’m kinda.. Uhmm. Scared for them..’ he blushed. I sighed again and climbed on a chair. ‘Don’t dare to look under my towel! If you do, I’ll throw the spider in your neck!’ ‘Ok! I won’t! Don’t throw that monster in my neck! I beg you!’ I smiled and mumbled: ‘Chicken..’ Quick I took the spider and came off the chair. ‘Maybe I keep him…. As a pet.’ Kevin stared at me. ‘You’re twisted.. Get the hell outta my room with that thing!’ I opened a window and let the spider go. ‘Here you go.. No spider anymore..’ ‘Thank you so much! You’re my hero! Really!’ ‘Well, this hero is going to finish her shower. I hope no one’s in the bathroom now..’ Quick I walked back and finished my shower. When I came downstairs, Kevin sat down next to me at the table. ‘How can I thank you by the way?’ I looked at him. ‘For saving me from that thing..’ ‘No problemo.. I’m glad I could save you from that tiny spider.’ The others laughed. ‘Another spider in your bedroom mate?’ Stevie asked him. Kevin nodded and blushed. ‘C’mon.. You guys know I’m afraid of them..’ ‘It’s okay.. And about how to thank me.. Let’s go for a nice ride.. I saw your motor..’ ‘Is there anything you don’t notice?’ Kevin sighed. ‘Ok,ok.. This afternoon I’ll take you for a ride on my motor. We’ll go to the ravine, ok?’ I nodded. But I didn’t knew how this could end in a complete disaster..
