Capítulo 9


It had been a warm day in April. I took a shower and walked back into my bedroom. Tonight we –and with ‘we’ I mean Kevin, Raúl, Stevie, Tess and Kate(Charlotte was ill)- were going out. Not in town, but in the city. My clothes were lying on the bed: A blue blouse and a black skinny jeans. Next to the bookcase stood a pair of black heels. I was standing with my back to the door. The radio was turned on and the CD from Mikel was playing. ‘I’ll be there for you through it all, even if saving you sends me to heaven..’ Soon I heard a slight ‘ahem’. Frightened I turned around and sighed relieved. ‘Oh, it’s you.. You scared me..’ I turned back to the bed. The radio began to play the next song. ‘Home’ from Daughtry. How often I haven’t wished to be home at that moment.. I heard him walking into my room. Deep inside me I wanted him to turn around and leave. But I knew he wouldn’t. He shut the door and walked to me. He pumped the volume from the radio up. He looked at me. A weird twinkle shinned in his eyes. On his face was a dirty grin. That in combination with him walking towards me, made me afraid. Alarm bells were ringing loud in my head, but I couldn’t move an inch. ‘Dave? What’s going on?’ he didn’t said a thing, he just grinned and walked to me. Finally he spoke. ‘Don’t try to scream. Nobody will hear you..’ He laughed softly. ‘Dave? What’s going on?’ I asked again. This time more scared. No reaction.. The grin disappeared and his laughter died in the music. The only thing what was still there, was that twinkle. I’ll never forget about that twinkle. He grabbed my wrist and held it high above my head. ‘Au!’ He pushed me down on my bed, holding my arms down with his knees. He unbuttoned his jeans and took something from his back pocket. He switched his knees for his hands. ‘If you scream, I’ll hit you hard. And besides: No one will hear you screaming..’ His voice was cold and hating. His breathe burned on my skin and the words in my mind. He placed my arms so that he could held them with one hand. With the other he ripped my towel off. Again that dirty grin followed by the feeling of his knee separating my legs. I closed my eyes, afraid of what would come. I felt a sharp pain, striking through my body. Tears of fear and pain rolled over my cheeks. Dave laughed about me. It looked like an hour before he was finally done. He got off me and hit me in my face. ‘Don’t dare to tell anyone about this. If you do, I’ll tell that you wanted it. Got it?’ I nodded and swallowed. He smiled. ‘Good girl.’ I heard him walking out of my room and he closed the door. I putted my underwear on and laid down under the covers. I cried and I cried until I didn’t had a tear left. My eyes were sticky of the tears. They had left marks on my cheeks. I took a big T-shirt and putted it on. Soon I heard some one knocking on the door. Quick I wiped my tears away. ‘Yes?’ My voice was weak and trembled a bit. The door opened and Lynn walked in. ‘Are you coming for dinner?’ ‘No.. I don’t feel so well.. If you don’t mind I stay here..’ ‘Okay. I’ll let one of the others bring you some tea, ok?’ I nodded. Lynn smiled and walked out of the room. I sighed and turned the radio back on.

Won’t someone come take me home..’ Again someone knocked on my door. ‘Yes?’ Kevin walked inside with a cup of tea. ‘Hey, Lynn told us that you didn’t feel so well.. Here’s some tea.’ He putted the cup down on the bedside table. ‘Are you sure that there’s nothing else?’ He looked at me with his friendly brown eyes. ‘Yes, I’m sure.. I don’t feel well.. That’s all.. Maybe some sleep would.. Would do me some.. Some good..’ Again I began to cry. Kevin sat down next to me on my bed and pulled me against himself. ‘Ssshh.. It’s okay..’ I laid my head against his chest and cried. I couldn’t stop. He caressed my back and hair. Finally I calmed down and he let me go. ‘Now, tell me. What’s really bothering you?’ I took the ring from my mother in my hand and sighed deep. ‘He.. He raped me.. He just came in and shut the door.. I couldn’t do a single thing.. I feel so dirty..’ Kevin looked at me. ‘Who did that Mar?’ I didn’t answered. ‘Who did this to you Maria?’ His voice was calm but still forcing. ‘Dave..’ I whispered. ‘WHAAT?!’ ‘Dave.. he did it.. And if I dared to tell anyone he would say that I wanted it, so that no one would believe me..’ Tears were still rolling over my cheeks. ‘That piece of.. We need to get you out of here.. Do you mind if I tell Raúl? Maybe he can help us.. Do you know somewhere you can go to?’ I nodded. ‘School settled a place in Miami for me, where I could stay during the study.. Maybe I could go earlier.. I have a phone number of the woman..’ ‘Good.. I’ll call Raúl, and we’ll think about a way to get you outta here. But you’re just going with us tonight. You can’t stay here al night. Especially not with that creep, okay?’ I nodded again. ‘Good, take another shower and put your clothes on. I’ll see you in 45 minutes.’ He gave me a big bear hug and left. Again I took a shower, turned some happy songs on and tried to forget about it for a while. Quick I drank the tea before it would be cold, putted my clothes on, did my hair and make-up and walked downstairs. With a self-confidence look in my eyes I walked into the livingroom. ‘I thought that you were staying there al night?’ ‘I told her to come with us.. Maybe she’d feel better after some fresh air.’ Kevin winked to me. ‘Okay, have fun!’ And she turned her head back to the TV. Dave didn’t even looked at me and I ignored him. ‘Okay, are you ready?’ Kevin took the car keys and we walked outside, ready for some fun in town. Ready to forget this. At least for a while.

Capítulo 10


It was far past midnight when we came back. Kevin had dropped Raúl at Drover’s Run. They had been talking about what happened at the bar and came with a plan. Everybody got out of the car and walked to the door. The lights were off, just like Kevin had thought. Quietly I unlocked the door. Kevin and I were the only ones who weren’t tipsy. ‘Be quiet!’ Kate said. ‘Stevie get of my foot!’ Tess muttered. I sighed and finally they managed to walk inside without hurting each other. Dave and Lynn were sleeping. And soon the others too, except Kevin and I. We walked to my room and I took my suitcases. ‘I don’t give a damn about what Lynn would think tomorrow, I can’t stay here any longer.’ Kevin nodded. I took my clothes and pushed them in the suitcase. Also my CDs, pictures, make-up and books disappeared in it. ‘Don’t forget Mikel’s CD.’ Kevin pointed at the radio. Quick I took it out of it and putted it in my shoulder bag. I also had putted some clean clothes in it and other stuff I might needed that night. Kevin would bring me to Wilgul. Raúl lived there together with Alex and Nick. And tomorrow I would go back to say goodbye and leave. ‘Do you want to tell the police about this?’ I looked at him. ‘I.. I don’t know.. Probably he will deny it, say that it was my own fault, that I wanted it.. It’s useless to tell them about this.. The only thing I can and will do is don’t give up fighting. This won’t get me down. He won’t win this.’ My voice was strong. Kevin nodded. ‘You know, I pick these up tomorrow.. I’m too tired to drag them down..’ I sighed and took my shoulder bag. ‘Good. Come, I’ll bring you to Drover's. I’m sure Alex and Nick know about this by now..’ We walked downstairs and got into his car. It was almost 2AM when we arrived at the house. The lights were still on. Kevin stopped the car and I got out. Together we walked to the door and I knocked on it. Soon the door opened and Alex stood in the doorway. ‘Ah, you must be Maria. Come in.’ Kevin followed me inside the house. Nick and Raúl were sitting in the livingroom. ‘Sorry to ask this mate, but why is she staying here tonight? I only know that there was a problem..’ Nick turned his face to Raúl. ‘Because someone was very nice and thought he deserved something from me.. That’s why.. And I’m not telling more details, it’s painful enough for me..’ The guys looked at me. Kevin noticed the twinkle in my eyes, the same as back then with the game where I kicked his ass. ‘Come, I’ll show you the way to the bedroom. If you want you can lock it, but we won’t do a thing.’ Raúl smiled and led me to the bedroom. ‘Normally it’s mine, but I’ll sleep in the livingroom tonight. I hope you can get some sleep tonight..’ He opened the door and I sat down on the bed. I kicked the heels of and laid down on my back, staring at the ceiling. Raúl wanted to close the door. I got up and walked to him. ‘Raúl? Thanks..’ I gave him a hug and closed the door. ‘De nada chica.’ He smiled and I locked the door. I still don’t know why, I knew that the boys wouldn’t try to hurt me in the way Dave did. Quick I got my pj’s on and crawled into the bed. I just sat under the blanket, waiting. I didn’t closed my eyes that night. I was scared. Scared for the dia-show I would see when I would close my eyes. I just sat on Raúl’s bed, reading one of my fave books. Soon the sun began to rise. The bed stood across the window so the sun shined right on my face. I looked at the alarm-clock. 5.00. I hadn’t slept all night and was tired as hell. I started to think what time it would be in Miami. Soon I felt a headache coming up and quit thinking. I rubbed over my forehead. Soon I heard someone knocking on my door. I came out of bed and unlocked the door. Raúl stood in front of me. ‘Buenos días! How did you sleep?’ he smiled cheery. ‘I haven’t slept at all, and now I’m tired as hell…’ ‘I’m sure you’ll get some sleep in the plane. Come, get dressed.’ And he closed the door again. Quick I putted my clothes on. I didn’t want to take a shower. A jeans and an old T-shirt. I had changed my shoes last night for sneakers and took them with me downstairs. In silence we ate breakfast and then it was time to go. On our way to Wilgul I called to Miami. ‘Hello? Sorry that I call you that late, I didn’t knew what time it was.. I’m Rosa Maria Piñero Camacho. Yes, the girl for the room.. Why I call now? Uhmm.. Something happened and I had to leave earlier. Is that okay? Good. Thanks a lot ma’am. Yes, I’ll fly today to Miami. No, last minute.. Okay, yes I’ll see you at the airport. Okay. Yes. Bye!’ And I hung up. We just arrived at the farm and I got out. Lynn came walking outside. ‘Why weren’t you here last night? And why are your suitcases packed?’ I sighed. This was going to be hard. ‘Hello Lynn, nice to see you too..’ We walked into the house and sat down in the sitting room. ‘Why is your stuff packed and why weren’t you here?’ Lynn asked again. Kevin was sitting next to me and held my hand. ‘I’m going to Miami today.. And I slept at Drover’s last night.’ Lynn looked at me with disbelieve. ‘Huh? But.. Why?’ ‘Because.. because something.. Happened and I can’t stay here any longer.. I’m sorry Lynn.’ Lynn still looked with disbelieve at me. I got up to get my stuff. Kevin helped me with the suitcases. ‘So.. This is it then.. Good luck in America sis.’ Lynn gave me a hug. ‘Thanks Lynn. I’ll miss ya..’ I hugged her back. Next were Stevie, Tess and Charlotte. Dave stuck his arms out and pulled me against himself for a hug. I just let him. ‘You can run, but you can’t hide.. I know how to find you in Miami.. This isn’t our last meeting.’ He whispered in my ear and laughed softly. ‘Yes, I’ll miss you too Dave..’ Quick I released him and went to the next one. ‘I’ll miss you, hero.. Good luck and take care.’ Kevin smiled and hugged me tight. ‘Yes, I will. Don’t worry mate.’ I smiled brave even after Dave’s words.. They scared me. Raúl would bring me to the airport. He took two of my suitcases and brought them to the car. ‘Bye!’ I waved and got into the car. Quick Raúl took off to Melbourne. I sighed. ‘What’s up?’ ‘Nothin’..’ “but something tells me that it will change into something soon.." I added in my mind. We arrived at Melbourne airport. Quick we brought my stuff inside and I bought a ticket to Miami. Not much later Australia was a dot below me and I was surrounded by clouds.

Capítulo 11



Years passed by and I had finished my study. I worked for the Miami Dade CSI and formed the day shift with Tony, Eva and Sam. Our boss was Jason de la Fuente. It was a nice guy and he really cared about everyone he knew. I didn’t want to tell about what happened in Australia, and why I came earlier. My contact person for the room didn’t knew anything about the real reason. I told her I had a fight with one of the employees which was a very good friend of the boss, so I had to leave or life would be like hell. A part of that was true. If I’d stay, my life would turn into a hell. Now I was happy and had my own apartment. It had three bedrooms, a bathroom, livingroom and a kitchen. Also a balcony with view over the beach. It took me two years as a waitress to pay for my study. At least the first year. While I was in school, I had to work to stay there. But it was worth it. And now I had a great job and a wonderful home.

We were working on a case. There were three men murdered. All execution style. Finally we had a suspect. It was a man who had a connection with all the victims. ‘Still I don’t think he did it..’ I said while drinking my coffee. ‘How do you mean? They are all connected to that man!’ Tony looked at me. ‘Yes, but what about a motive? I know that LaRue connects the victims with each other, but what was his motive?’ ‘Tony, she has a point..’ Sam sipped of his coffee. ‘I also don’t think he did it.. It’s too easy to blame him..’ Eva said with a thoughtful face. Tony sighed. ‘We’ll question him again..’ We got out of the elevator. Jason was waiting for us. ‘You can go back down. We have another body..’ We looked at each other and got back into the elevator. We arrived at the scene. It was again a man, executed. Also with a 9mill. ‘Do you still think it was LaRue? He’s in custody.. How could he do this?’ Sam said. I putted my bag on the ground. ‘Guys, do you smell that?’ They all sniffed. ‘That’s not really the scent a man would use, don’t you think?’ Eva said and putted her bag next to mine. ‘This is done by a woman.. And one with pure hate for men.. I think she might be raped or abused by a manly relative or friend. She kept the anger inside her till now. She can only talk bad about them. You’ll see that when you ask her friends they’ll say what she thinks about them. And that isn’t something nice. Probably she thinks men are pigs, animals who can only hurt someone and not love someone. That they think about women in a sexual way, and not romantically or friendly.’ I was still staring at the shot wound in his head. A car arrived and the coroner got out. Jason walked to him. ‘ Welcome doc!’ He shook the hand of the doc; Felipe Cassia. He was not really old, but he wasn’t young either; about mid 30. He had brown hair and wore glasses. He walked to the body. ‘Definitely a man, Caucasian.. Exit wound at the back of the head..’ He looked up. ‘Execution style. This is the fourth man this week who got shot. And also execution style..’ Jason sighed. ‘I know Felipe.. I know.. We’re still working on it..’ Felipe turned back to the body. ‘He wears a necklace. Heart shaped medallion.. But I leave that to you guys.’ He smiled and looked in our way. Not much later he left with the body and we began to look at the crime scene. After we collected evidence we drove back to the office. Back there I took a good look at that necklace. Something told me that it could be a connection to the killer. I opened the medallion and saw a photo of a woman. Jason passed by. ‘J! I think I might have found something!’ He walked inside. ‘Tell me..’ I told him about what I thought. He nodded. ‘Now we have to find that woman..’ ‘Ask his family.. Maybe they know her..’ Suddenly my phone rang. ‘Sorry J.. Gotta take it.’ Jason walked out of the room and I answered my phone while I looked out of the window. ‘Maria speaking..’ A familiar voice replied: ‘Hola darling!’ ‘Mikel? Hola!’ I smiled. ‘How are you?’ ‘I’m fine, thanks.. And you?’ ‘I’m having summer holiday now and visiting my parents at the moment. They moved back to Tenerife, where Dani and I were born. But when Dani went to secondary school we moved to Madrid.. Anyway; Is it okay if I come over for a week?’ ‘Say hi from me therewhat?’ I heard him laughing. ‘Is it okay if I come over for a week. You gave me your address for mail, so I know how to get there.’ I could hear him smile. ‘Sure! When do you come?’ ‘That, my love, is a surprise. But it will be soon.’ ‘Okay. See you soon then. Love you very much! And say hi from me, okay?’ ‘I will. Love you too honey. See you soon. Ciao!’ And he hung up. I closed my mobile and smiled. Soon I would see him again after 4 years. ‘Maria, we might have an ID for that woman.’ I turned around. Tony was standing in the door way. ‘Okay, I’m coming with you.’ I putted my mobile back in my pocket and followed him. Finally a breakthrough.. Finally seeing Mikel..
